If I were independently wealthy, which unfortunately I am not, I could think of nothing more intriguing to do than to devote my time to studying and observing wildlife behavior and habits.  Just imagine if you were a gnat on a tree and could watch a doe raising her fawn or a hawk teaching its young to hunt, or a hummingbird weaving its tiny, intricate nest high in the treetops.  What must it be like to be witness to the animal world rarely seen by humans?

In her book, Lily Pond, naturalist Hope Ryden gives us just such a glimpse into the fascinating lives of a pair of American beavers.  For four years she observed, photographed, and documented the activities of Lily and her mate, The Inspector General, as they made their home on Lily Pond, following their lives as they raised their offspring, foraged for food, and endured the hardships of winter.  She has successfully captured the essence of family life in a beaver pond.  This book was written over 15 years ago, but it might as well have been written last week.  Ms. Ryden’s timeless, easy-going writing style is a joy to read.  It’s both entertaining and enlightening.  If you are curious about beavers and are looking for a change of pace, this book is worth a look.
